I split my time half and half between the hospital and the office. When I’m in the hospital, I’m seeing patients with complicated lung problems, or exacerbations of underlying pulmonary conditions, and patients who are in the intensive care unit. When I’m in the office, I see patients with pulmonary disorders — so all sorts of breathing disorders — asthma, COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease], emphysema, lung cancers, chronic cough, and patients with sleep disorders. And the reason sleep and pulmonary are tied together is a lot of the sleep disorders are related to sleep-disordered breathing, like sleep apnea — which has been shown, in recent years, to cause people to be short of breath all the time, not just when they sleep. I love a puzzle, and I love figuring out why somebody got into the situation they’re in. That’s why I chose this field, because there are so many different systems that interplay that can make someone short of breath, and I really enjoy the puzzle. But what’s even better is when you see a patient get better and just comes in routinely to see you because everything’s okay, and they need a refill on the stuff that you’re giving them to keep them feeling good.
